Montgomery county, is in the state of Alabama with a population of 228,954 persons making it the fifth most populous county in the state. The county seat which is Montgomery is also the state’s capital. Handling and accessing public records is regulated by the Alabama Open Records Law which gives every citizen the right to request and inspect copies of public records except where the statute provides otherwise for such records. By virtue of this law, individuals may obtain access to certain records including criminal records or certain parts of it, and vital records or certain parts of it also depending on who is requesting for the record. Obtaining Montgomery’s Criminal History Records

Persons interested in conducting a background check on another person, or a person who is interested in obtaining a copy of their criminal history may obtain such records from the Montgomery Police Department. The process will involve the requester visiting the Police report request site and provide the required details such as the case number, the name of the person requesting the record, the full address of the requester, the email address, the phone number, the purpose of request, the description of the record which should be specific enough to aid the search process and the e-signature of the requester is also requested. In some cases, identification may be required to allow access to this record. Residents may also make the request by physically visiting the Police Department and making their requests while paying the appropriate fees which includes: $5 for an incident/offense report, a $5 arrest report fee, and a $15 accident report fee. Detailed statewide criminal history may also be obtained from the Criminal Records Department of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Persons eligible to obtain this record may obtain the Application to Review Alabama Criminal History Information Record which will also require the fingerprint of the applicant who in this case is the subject. Thereafter the document, along with the fingerprint form, a current and valid photo ID, the fee of $25 for the first copy and $5 for additional copies which should be issued with a money order or cashier’s check to Criminal Records and Identification Unit. Obtaining Montgomery’s Inmate Records

Inmate records for incarcerated individuals residing in correctional facilities in Montgomery County, Alabama may be obtained from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. To make the search, the inmate is required to provide the last name, the first name, and the middle name as well as the arrest date to help with the search. Statewide inmate records may be obtained from the Alabama Department of Corrections, where requesters may make their search by providing the inmate’s Alabama Institutional Serial number or the first name and last name or either of the two. Where the requester uses the first four letters of the inmate’s last name, and hits the search button, all inmates whose last name begins with those letters would be shown. 

Obtaining Sex Offender Information in Montgomery 

Sex offender information for the county of Montgomery can be gotten from the Sheriff office web portal where residents may make the search using the address, city, the state, and the Zip code.  Where offenders are non compliant, the list may be shown to the requester after selecting the non compliant list. Requesters and concerned persons may sign up to receive alerts on the movements of sex offenders in and around their location. Statewide sex offender information may be gotten from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sex Offender Registry.

Montgomery’s Vital Records

Vital records for Montgomery county are the records that evidence and celebrate the special occasions in a person’s life that are of concern to the state. Examples of vital records are an individual’s birth, death, marriage and divorce records. 

Obtaining Montgomery County Birth Records

Records for births that occurred in the County of Montgomery can be gotten from the Montgomery County Health Department where birth records dating as far back as 1908 may be obtained, these records are confidential for at least 125 years after the event. During this period only the following persons may obtain a Montgomery birth certificate:

  • Persons on the certificate 
  • Parents or legal guardian 
  • Spouse of the subject on the certificate 
  • Child of the subject of the certificate 
  • Sibling of the subject of the certificate 
  • Legal representative of the subject of the certificate

The above persons would be required to provide an acceptable means of identification, and pay the required fees including $15.00 for the first copy of the birth certificate and $6 for other copies requested at the same time, there is also an expedited fee of $15. These payments may be made with a check or money order made payable to “State Board of Health”. Obtaining Montgomery County Death Records

Death records for the County of Montgomery since 1908 may be obtained from Montgomery County Health Department and is confidential for at least 25 years and would only be released to certain persons such as:

  • Parents or legal guardian 
  • Spouse of the subject on the certificate 
  • Child of the subject of the certificate 
  • Sibling of the subject of the certificate 
  • Legal representative of the subject of the certificate

Obtaining Montgomery County Marriage Records

Marriage records for Montgomery county are not restricted and may be obtained by anyone with enough information required to conduct the search. Records from 1936 till date are available with the Alabama Centre of Health Statistics and to obtain this record, the individual requesting would be required to download the application form and attach the required fees including $15.00 for the first copy of the birth certificate and $6 for other copies requested at the same time, and an expedited fee of $15. Divorce records for Montgomery county from 1950 could be gotten from Alabama centre for health statistics and these documents are not restricted. The process for obtaining the divorce records is the same as obtaining a Montgomery’s marriage record.
